The Unpopular Opinions of a Post-Modern Prep

The appropriately inappropriate opinions of a post-modern prep. All the news that's fit to print, and some things that aren't. This tumblr will address hypocrisy in all its flavours. I will be brutal in doing so.

Disclosure culture—

unknowablewoman:

It’s disturbing.

No one is obligated to reveal their sexual orientation, gender identity or dis/ability status to anyone else on this godforsaken website.

STOP assuming you know any of these things about people just because you’re involved in an internet spat. You cannot fucking tell if someone is trans unless they tell you, and the same goes for queerness and dis/ability status. Can you seriously not see, SJWs*, that there are enormous social consequences that come along with revealing any of these things? Or maybe someone just doesn’t want to.

If you’re seriously incapable of engaging other people in critical discussion without knowing their checklist of specific privileges/oppressions, I don’t even want to imagine how you must act IRL.

*SJW = social justice warrior

(The only exception I can think of to this rule right now is race—I think, for obvious reasons, white people should be obligated to disclose that they’re white. Should mixed-race people have to reveal their status, though? What if someone isn’t white but passes as white? I honestly don’t know, and I’m curious what my followers’ thoughts are on that matter.)

I’m of mixed feelings on this.
Personally speaking, I’ve kept this one blog as neutral as possible in order to maintain anonymity and make sure that my ‘fun’ blog doesn’t get inundated with hate (which I have seen happen, and which I would like to avoid).

I do think that if you’re discussing things like race, bringing it up might be important. However, it does take the aspect of having to ‘credentialize’ yourself; I recently got into something of a disagreement with a SJ activist regarding hip-hop. During that argument, I was informed that I should take a seat because my ‘white woman tears’ weren’t wanted.
I’m not white.

But that’s neither here nor there, because the points I was making had nothing to do with race. So, I don’t think that an opinion is necessarily invalid because of someone’s race/ethnicity/orientation, and I think that having to disclose it in order to even make a point is sort of needlessly reductionist.
