I dont like rap and it has nothing to do with race.
Oh, you are really too much fun.
You, random stranger on the internet, snerk at me for making blanket generalizations and then go on and make sweeping ones of your own. I don’t have to credentialize myself to you.
However, I will say this: I am a lesbian.
My primary issue with ‘mainstream’ rap is that it is alarmingly homophobic and misogynistic, and that has absolutely nothing to do with the colour of anyone’s skin and everything to do with the content of their character. Frankly speaking, it isn’t racist to abstain from supporting a music genre that attacks me, it’s simply sound logic.
Consequently, I see no problem supporting musical genres (including ones that are traditionally Black-helmed, such as Jazz and Gospel) that are not actively working against me. I can appreciate and enjoy the artistry that goes into this—and likewise, I can appreciate and enjoy queer and woman-positive rap. The only problem is—if there IS a lot of it, I haven’t heard it and consequently, it’s only the homophobic asshats in the mainstream who get the recognition—and apparently, it’s now considered racist to call them on those harmful and discriminatory attitudes.
I find it telling that you’re making excuses for the homophobic and misogynistic lyrics posted above by saying that the artists are working in a white-supremacist etc etc environment; they are grown men and should be responsible for their own actions and words. As for Nicki Minaj, her purpoted bisexuality hasn’t precisely manifested itself in anything but lyrics about licking her kitty cat in order to go see Usher. You’ll excuse me if I don’t find that particularly appealing.
As for your charming allegation about ‘niggers’, you’re putting words in my mouth that I never said. Dress however you pleased, and engage in whatever behaviour you like—insofar as it doesn’t threaten me, I sincerely couldn’t care less. Likewise, my particular distaste for hateful music includes homophobic and misogynistic words in other genres, so you’re making blanket generalizations about my character that are entirely false. But it’s charming to see you froth at the mouth about some imaginary slight, so by all means, continue.
Finally: The fact that homophobia and misogyny are, as you claim, used as defenses against the dominant culture—and to refuse to accept those homophobic and misogynistic behaviours is somehow racist is absurd. It’s not my place to tell that community how to handle their own affairs; however, it IS my right to remove myself from the context wherein that vitriol affects my own life, and exercising that right is no more racist than choosing not to listen to Baroque music is ageist because ‘old people listen to it’.I didn’t ask for you to give credentials or anything else, I couldn’t give less of a fuck about who or what you are. I was just informing you that you are a racist and crying about it doesn’t change the fact. Instead of just saying “I don’t like music that is misogynist and homophobic” you had to say “I DON’T LIKE HIP HOP AND RAP”. Instead of understanding their is a context behind the language (which, of course, doesn’t forgive the individuals and their actions and language) you’d rather just blame and dismiss a whole section of African American culture. That is racist.
“Working against you?” AHAHAHAHAHAH
Hey guys, look-A white lesbian is being oppressed by the homophobia and sexism in hip hop!
As an Afro-Latina queer, I say a big “fuck you”. It’s the black men out to get the white ladies, like always, but everyone forgets how the white men were always out raping and attacking black women. You don’t think I exist, huh? You don’t think I’m not hurt by this shit in my community? This has nothing to do with you, my friend. It doesn’t hurt you. Hell, it doesn’t even fucking touch you. The ills of the black and Latino community hurt ourselves, not white people. Quit shedding your white women tears about yourself and fucking realize. POC queers are the ones who are disproportionately hurt by hate crimes. This sexism and homophobia hurts us, not you.
Do you see how you word what you’re saying? Instead of realizing that the reason why you haven’t heard women and queer positive hip hop and rap is because you’re a bigot and dismissed the whole genre, you claim its because there just isn’t that much. Then again, instead of acknowledging that the reason the more homophobic and sexist mindless hip hop is what gets attention in the mainstream is because that is what the white supremacist (like people have said, the some of the biggest consumers of hip hop and rap are white males and the people behind the shit in the mainstream are white males, they’re going to push their heteropatriarchal homophobic bullshit in what they sell and will want to have those norms reinforced in their music) entertainment industry churns out in general, you pretty much lay the blame on the artists themselves for becoming popular and while you simultaneously over and over ignore the context behind their words (which is why you refuse to answer to 90% of what has been told and posted to you). Instead of listening to people saying “Hey, we see right through you and know you don’t give a fuck about actual misogyny and homophobia, you’re just trying to find a cheap excuse to hate on blackness”, you set up false dichotomies and claim that we must be OK with sexism and homophobia.
TL:DR-YOUR RACIST BIAS PERMEATES YOUR LOGIC AND MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE AN ASSHOLE.
First of all: you’re cute. I never said I was white. But it’s pretty telling that you automatically assume that anyone with a dissenting opinion is Whitey.
Get over it. It is entirely possible to be a part of a culture and disagree with certain views.
Y ahora me vas a decir que no soy Latina, commemierda? Soy Dominicana, primera generacion en Canada. Pues no me hables de que soy una gringa, you reductionist idiot. Before you start throwing shit about how This Isn’t Your Community, take a deep fucking breath and think about what you’re saying, because for all you know, that person is.
Like me.
And now on to the rest of this response:
The fact that I am a Latina lesbian means that these words do affect me. It means that the machismo and the sexism affects me when I walk down the street and the homophobia shows up every time I sit down to the dinner table. This is my community and it is so shameful that artists like Talib Kweli are never going to get mainstream attention because narcissistic lackwits like Kanye West are going to be spewing their crap all over the airwaves.
I’ve got nothing but respect for activist rap—but that’s not the rap we’re hearing, is it? It’s not the rap and hip hop that makes money or waves; we allow that fine honour to go to misogynistic and homophobic twats like Kanye and Royce, and they get a pass because at least someone is getting their voices out, and that’s ridiculous.
If all rap was Flobots and K’naan and Kweli, I’d have no problem with it. But it isn’t, and it isn’t being racist to say that I have a problem with the mainstream rap that’s getting played.
But what I’m saying is this: Queer and woman-positive rap might exist, but it’s not making the airwaves, and at this point it’s so divorced from the mainstream it’s practically invisible. So let’s phrase it thusly: I don’t like mainstream rap and hip hop and it has nothing to do with race. Because for every empowering artist addressing ills in our community, there’s a handful more who are doing everything in their power through their music to set women and lgbt folk back—and you tell me which of them is getting airplay. The colour of my skin doesn’t mean I have to be okay with that, and it doesn’t make me a racist for calling it out when I see it.
TL;DR: I’m not white, and I still don’t like rap, hip hop, or any other misogynistic or homophobic music.
