The Unpopular Opinions of a Post-Modern Prep: I dont like rap and it has nothing to do with race.
I think ppl forget that just bc they’re not actively thinkin “I dont like…Also note that the homophobia and misogyny of hip-hop/rap is almost always brought up as a reason to not listen to it as an entire genre of music, but the homophobia and misogyny rampant in say rock music or pop music is never of note or worth rejecting the genres wholesale. It’s almost as if this offensive behavior and vulgarity is only worth noting and being particularly repulsed by when black bodies are the ones doing it. In fact, the image of the rocker as rich, vulgar, overly-sexed womanizer who doesn’t give a fuck about decency suddenly becomes intolerable when you replace rock with rap. Hmm. Coincidence?
Of course I’m going to bring up homophobia and misogyny in rap as a reason not to listen to it. I’m a lesbian. It affects me personally. Naturally it’s going to be a main arbiter of my decision.
Likewise, I don’t know about other people, but my disdain for misogyny and homophobia isn’t limited to rap. I make it a point not to listen to music that goes out of it’s way to insult me, or to support artists that I know are hostile to the very fact of my existence (a lot of country artists fall under this category, and most of them are, as a point of fact, white).
Don’t make generalizations and then apply them to me, when I’ve stated my position numerous times. I find Charlie Sheen (the first example that springs to mind of a rich, vulgar, over-sexed womanizer with no concept of decency) just as repulsive as Royce Da 5’9, and it has everything to do with his attitude to things that directly concern myself, and nothing at all to do with the colour of his skin.
